Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
