Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in armed forces or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all made an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the representatives declared in the brief video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Furious Reply
The video message appeared to prompt a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified announcement condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no position in America," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our United States with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the security of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these extreme online messages and recant his violent language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Lawmakers' Defiant Response
The representatives who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We are veterans and defense specialists who value this United States and swore an pledge to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
More Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is addressing," the official stated. "There are current representatives of the federal government who worked together to organize a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The purity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
