Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.
This Oscar-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd passed away aged 89.
This star, whose credits spanned Chinatown, passed away at home in Ojai, California. The news was announced through a message by her offspring, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern.
Dern, who starred with her mother in several movies such as Wild at Heart, described her as “my incredible hero and my special gift as a mother”, writing that she was present during her final moments.
“She was an exceptional mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist and empathetic spirit that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
Initial Roles and Rise to Fame
Ladd’s early career saw small roles on television series like The Fugitive whereas that decade saw her starring with Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
During that year, 1974, she appeared alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her acting earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.
1980s and Beyond
Throughout the 1980s, she starred in the thriller the movie Black Widow plus humorous film Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a sitcom inspired by Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she received a further Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her part in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she acted as the parent of her biological child Dern’s character. The next year she was awarded another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose which included her daughter.

That decade also saw roles in humorous films Cemetery Club bringing her back with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played the mother of Dern again. The decade also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for work on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom plus Touched by an Angel.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She persisted in performing with her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and White’s comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She also appeared with actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
