Japan's Economic Output Shrinks as Exports Suffer by US Trade Duties
The Japanese economic system has shown a contraction for the first time in a year and a half, largely caused by falling overseas shipments due to newly imposed American trade duties.
G7 Growth Standings
The Japanese economy has become the initial G7 nation to report an economic contraction in the previous three-month period.
As the United States still needing to publish its GDP figures for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven economic standings show:

- UK: +0.1%
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
- German economy: 0%
- Italy: 0%
- Japanese economy: -0.4%
Tourism Stocks Decline during Diplomatic Dispute with Beijing
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is experiencing an escalating diplomatic tension with China concerning Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's travel and consumer firms have declined noticeably after China advised its residents to avoid traveling to Japan.
This decision by Beijing heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by remarks from Tokyo's new PM about the possibility of sending troops in the event of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation led to a surge of selling across Japanese leisure stocks.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3 percent
- Japan Airlines fell by 3.75%
"The China-Japan dispute over Taiwan and China's advisory discouraging travel to Japan creates near-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25% of Japan's international visitors, making retail outlets, luxury retail, and hospitality especially at risk."
Economic Decline Details
Japan's gross domestic product fell by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as industrial exports were affected by duties levied by the US recently.
Overseas shipments were a key factor of the contraction, dropping by 1.2% compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Previously, the American government had threatened Japan with a additional 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15% when the two countries concluded a trade deal.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"Japan's economy was stable in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that growth is paused temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate recovery trend going forward."
The White House has recently acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, produce, coffee and bananas amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
