Weather experts have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are expected to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Readings Forecast to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this indicated the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely essential.
