New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
