A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
