The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
