The original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he plans to independently develop this new product within an individual collection showcasing causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators and Corporate Owner

This latest announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders maintain that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Support

The entrepreneur stated via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism plus Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions

The founder revealed that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after many years with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
