The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Continue Search for Gunman.

Two students who were killed in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their killer carried on following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences online, stating: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, his family confirmed.

The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.

Details of the Attack

Nine more persons were injured in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a search at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our community”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Police that entered the hotel seized a pair of pistols and magazines when the person of interest was arrested, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one pupil was discharged from care, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and peers and grieve for of his promising future.”
