A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us verify the footage.
We are checking images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
