Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
