Whenever a teenage makes club history in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
